Eating like a Shepherd!

Last night we enjoyed pie….

Not your regular pie. A Shepherd’s Pie, as we call it. I wanted to make something that represented the Shepherds on the day of the birth of Christ. These were lowly men in some people’s eyes yet honoured through God, to see the birth of His son. Before I came to Christ I was lowly too. What a wonderful God we serve!

Shepherd’s Pie came to be known as that around 1877 when they used meat such as mutton and lamb. But, it originally was for the poor when potatoes were introduced as a food staple in 1791. Then, it was called Cottage Pie.

Below I will show you how I feed my hungry crew of 7. This includes 4 boys, 1 man and two ladies 😀

My Shepherds pie uses venison because my husband hunts and is a cheap means of meat for us. Plus, it is super lean and natural to eat–Which would have been similar to the foods resourced for back then, and it stays true to being a cheap meal today!

So Enjoy!

Cooking Venison is cheap for us and may not be for others…

Use whatever you have available. However, if you use fattier meat. Omit the oil later and drain some of that fat out!

IMG_0032

Gather the amount of potatoes you will need. I need a lot.

IMG_0031

Peel potatoes. If you are like my mom and still use the old-fashioned knife…then, you probably still have all your potatoes–and you wouldn’t have accidentally dropped two in the garbage while peeling them, like I did!

IMG_0033

Chop into Bite-sized pieces! This cooks faster.

IMG_0034

Wash potatoes!

IMG_0035

Drain the dirty Potato water.

IMG_0036

Add clean water to your clean potatoes!

IMG_0037

Add salt to your potatoes. This is my little secret! Bring them to a boil and let them continue boiling at Medium heat as to not over cook them. You want them soft and falling apart but, not absorbing too much water!

IMG_0038

Add oil to your venison! About 2 tablespoons and start cooking on Medium/High heat.

IMG_0040

Gather 2 small onions and garlic cloves. I used about 5 cloves.

Chop into small pieces and mince garlic if you don’t have a garlic press.

IMG_0043

Gather spices that you would like to use.

I chose these to enhance the natural taste of venison and give it more of an authentic taste. I have:

Organic Better than Bouillon (I LOVE this stuff) 1 HEAPING Tablespoon.

2 Bay leaves

1/3 Cup of Rogers or Organic White Flour

2 Cups of water

Seasoning Salt of your choice

Thyme (1Tablespoon)

Marjoram (1 Tablespoon)

Sage (1 Tablespoon)

*We love herbs and spices 😀

IMG_0044

Add ingredients–except water, bouillon, and flour, to pot of cooking meat

(when it is about half way done cooking)

IMG_0046

Whisk water, bouillon and flour together.

IMG_0047

Add to meat, stir and cook a little more.

Take out Bay leaves, they are not edible!

IMG_0048

Drain Potatoes when done–that is when it is soft and mashes easily.

IMG_0049

Get some Organic frozen corn or another veggie you want to use. Layer on top of the cooked meat.

IMG_0050

Gather the Ingredients for making your potatoes.

You will need; butter, salt (to taste..use enough…) and cream

I like using half and half cream or full cream. I know, I am such a rebel!

IMG_0051

Use 1/2 Cup of cream and 1/4 Cup of butter.

IMG_0054

Whisk/Blend all into potatoes until very smooth.

IMG_0055

Spread potatoes evenly on top of corn layer. Sprinkle some paprika and marjoram on top for added appearance and flavour.

IMG_0056

Have oven pre-heated at 400 degrees.

IMG_0057

Place your pie into the oven!

IMG_0060

Set timer for 18 minutes.

IMG_0061

Now it is time to clean up the mess of making your wonderful Pie. 18 minutes should be enough!

IMG_0062

I had two minutes left and…

IMG_0063

got it all done 😀

IMG_0064

Take out your wonderful and nummy Dinner!

IMG_0065

If you are Canadian, you will want it with Ketchup. However, my kids have eaten all the ketchup which is perfect for me because I love it, just, as is.

Enjoy!!

Luke 2:13-20  from Bible Gateway

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”[c]

15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely[d] known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.”
